Shahir considers himself the luckiest AF winner

Akademi Fantasia’s latest champion Shahir Zawawi tells DENNIS CHUA that he is mindful of the challenges of show business THE world of show business is a challenge — you can be “up” one day and “down” the next.

This is Akademi Fantasia 4 (AF4) winner Faizal Ramly’s advice to the reality talent show’s latest champion, Shahir Zawawi, whom he supported in the recent eighth season.

Shahir, who supported Faizal four years ago, is mentally prepared to “step into stardom”, knowing that Faizal’s relative obscurity in the industry can happen to any artiste.

Shahir says: “While Faizal isn’t sharing the popularity level of his successors, I’ll always be proud of him, for proving that you are a winner when you are comfortable with yourself.

“He and Mawi of AF3 have proved that anybody can win.” Shahir considers himself the “luckiest” AF winner, because he was the only wildcard AF Masuk contestant to win. Past wildcard contestants finished second.

“I thought Adira (Suhaimi, the runner-up) would win because she was consistent. Then again, Faizal beat crowd favourite Farhan Azizan.” Shahir is also lucky to have KRU show business empire head Norman Abdul Halim as his principal and mentor. Coincidentally, they both come from Kampar, Perak.

“I’ll always be grateful to Cikgu Norman for changing my life. He pushed me hard and made me mentally prepared for show business.” Shahir has always admired KRU brothers Norman, Yusry and Edry because they have worked hard to become the country’s top music, film and television producers.

“They started from the bottom, just as I have, and now, they are sharing their tips with the AF8 stars.” While Shahir is focusing on his singing career, the former member of nasyid act Saujana also plans to pursue an engineering degree at International Islamic University, Gombak, in future.

“I’m also interested in acting and I’d love to star in productions with Faizal and AF5’s Heliza Helmi. They were great in the films Momok, Pulau Asmara and Syurga Cinta.” Shahir and the other 11 AF8 contestants now have their own compilation album produced by Astro. Each has a song written and composed by Edry.
Shahir nak belakon ker...hehehe....besh...besh....

Shahir performs Kebahagiaan Dalam Perpisahan while Adira sings Ku Ada Kamu.

The other songs are Kenapa? (Firdaus Eli), RSVP (Maulana Mohamed), VIP (Iwan Chew), Penanggung Sepi (Ain Basir), Hujung Minggu (Farina Jamhari), Aku Sudah Merdeka (Nadia Roselan), Bangun Semula (Alif Kadim), Berakhir Sebelum Bermula (Anum Aharun), Hati-Hati (Ema Suhaimi) and Bernafas Lagi (Shahril Saleh).

The AF8 compilation album was launched by Astro Entertainment Sdn Bhd executive director Zainir Aminullah and Astro Ria channel manager Azlin Reza Azmi recently. The event was attended by the AF8 students and KRU.

Zainir says: “Astro will soon produce entertainment shows centred on Shahir, as we did with previous winners. Some of the students will also star in our television series.” Norman says: “They will also get a chance to collaborate with KRU’s artistes. I’ll continue to guide them, but they have to work extra hard to establish themselves in the industry.” Meanwhile, Faizal congratulated Shahir on his victory and expressed confidence that he would “make it big”.

Faizal is working on his second album which is produced by Alakazam Productions and is starring in a horror film.

“The album will be out in October, with eight songs that are mostly ballads,” he says.
The AF8 stars will be visiting Selayang Mall (June 12), KL Sentral (June 13), Berjaya Times Square (June 19), Dewan Kapitol, Kangar (July 3 and 4), Jusco Bukit Raja, Klang (July 10), Terminal One, Seremban (July 11), Mahkota Parade, Malacca (July 17) and Kompleks Bukit Jambul, George Town (July 24).
